Step Into History with Your Student at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park!
Give your student the chance to explore the rich history of Hilton Head and the surrounding region with an engaging History Hike at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. Guided by the park’s expert staff, students will discover the area's transformation from the post-Revolutionary era through the Civil War, gaining insight into Mitchelville’s pivotal role as the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people. Through interactive learning, they’ll see how this historic site continues to be preserved and celebrated today.
The second part of this experience brings history to life with a special Harriet Tubman exhibit—Journey to Freedom—on display for a limited time. Through activities and games led by park staff, students will deepen their understanding of Tubman’s incredible impact on freedom seekers in the Lowcountry before, during, and after the Civil War.
To complete this immersive experience, students will have the unique opportunity to meet archaeologists working on-site under Dr. Katie Seeber’s leadership. They’ll get an up-close look at the latest discoveries, ask questions about artifacts being uncovered, and take part in a fun scavenger hunt or hands-on activity designed to show the importance of preserving Mitchelville’s legacy.
This is more than a field trip—it’s an opportunity for your student to walk in the footsteps of history and connect with the stories that shaped our nation. Don’t miss this enriching and unforgettable experience!
