Travel back to the Civil War era and experience Hilton Head Island as it was from 1861-1865, when Union forces occupied the area. Students will take on the role of Union Commander Percival Drayton and recreate the Battle of Port Royal, gaining a hands-on understanding of this pivotal moment in history. They’ll also explore how the war transformed the island, from military camps to the creation of Mitchelville, the first self-governed town for freed African Americans.
