Debate Club (ages 12+)

DEBATE CLUB IS A COMPREHENSIVE 12-WEEK COURSE FOCUSING ON THE TEAM POLICY MODEL OF DEBATE PRACTICED IN THE NATIONAL CHRISTIAN FORENSICS AND COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION (NCFCA) HOMESCHOOL LEAGUE. THE PRIORITY OF THIS CLASS IS TO CULTIVATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOGICAL THOUGHT, ARTICULATE SPEECH, AND GODLY BEHAVIOR IN STUDENTS THROUGH THE ART OF DEBATE. THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT WITH MUCH THOUGHT GIVEN TO THE REAL WORLD APPLICATION OF THE SKILLS LEARNED IN THE CLASSROOM.
THIS COURSE BUILDS UPON THE FOUNDATIONAL UNDERSTANDING OF DEBATE THEORY THROUGH READING ASSIGNMENTS, QUIZZES, AND GROUP-PROJECT GRADED HOMEWORK SPACED OUT THROUGH THE SEMESTER. STUDENTS WILL GET HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE WITH PLANNED WEEKLY DEBATES AND FEEDBACK FROM FELLOW STUDENTS AND THEIR INSTRUCTOR. ADDITIONALLY, THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPING PRESENTATION AND ORATORICAL SKILLS THROUGH DRILLS, HOMEWORK, AND DEBATES THEMSELVES.
WHILE THE WORKLOAD OF ASSIGNMENTS WILL VARY FROM WEEK TO WEEK, THE SUGGESTED MINIMUM OF WORK OUTSIDE OF CLASS IS FIVE HOURS SPREAD EVENLY THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. STUDENTS MUST HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER, PRINTER, AND GMAIL ADDRESS (FREE) (ASSIGNMENTS, ANSWER KEYS, GRADES, AND RESOURCES WILL BE COMMUNICATED THROUGH GOOGLE DRIVE AND GMAIL).
Typical workload each week will include 3-4 hours of online research and/or reading, 15-20 minutes per day of drills, half an hour per week corresponding with your debate partner, and class time (3 hours).
Students will need to order a source book of their option (costs between $30 and $100 depending on the selection) early in the semester that will be explained by the instructor.
